Chandan is currently based out of Bermo Coalfields in Bokaro District (Jharkhand), where he plays a pivotal role in aligning the company’s coal operations with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since joining Coal India in 2014—just after CSR became mandatory under the Companies Act 2012—he has been instrumental in shaping the company’s approach to CSR. As one of the first CSR officers at Coal India, Chandan got opportunities to drive initiatives that focus on creating an equitable, inclusive, and sustainable transition in the energy sector.
Chandan’s professional journey began in 2010 when he joined SKS Microfinance as an Area Manager. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing operations across five districts in Bihar, managing a client base of over 65,000 members and leading a dedicated team of 140 field staff, 16 Assistant Branch Managers, 22 Branch Managers, and 6 Unit Managers. This early experience in microfinance laid a strong foundation for his later work in CSR, as he saw firsthand how empowering communities with financial services could transform lives.
In 2012, Chandan made the move to State Bank of India, where he worked as a Deputy Manager and Credit Analyst. Here, he gained invaluable experience in general banking, international banking, and credit analysis for Mid-Corporate Group Accounts. His time at SBI allowed him to develop a broad understanding of financial services, which has been key in his later work in CSR and community development.
Now, at Coal India, Chandan is excited about the future of coal in a world shifting towards sustainability and he continues to leverage his diverse expertise to envision a balanced energy future where coal complements renewable resources and continues to drive economic growth while reducing environmental harm.

Q. How has been your journey from IIFM so far?
A. My career so far has been very exciting, full of opportunities and learning experiences. It all began with my campus placement at SKS Microfinance in 2010, one of the leading microfinance organizations at the time. Just a few months into my role, I witnessed firsthand the high of the company’s IPO launch, followed by the challenges posed by the Andhra Microfinance Crisis. Navigating through these extreme highs and lows taught me invaluable lessons in resilience and adaptability—lessons that have continued to guide me throughout my career.
From there, I made the transition to the State Bank of India. Moving from “Banker to the Poor” SKS Microfinance (Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited) to “Banker to Every Indian” State Bank of India gave me a comprehensive understanding of the finance industry.
It was in 2014 that I moved to Coal India and has been working happily here for more than a decade now.

A. My experience at Coal India Limited, particularly with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), has been nothing short of transformative. Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of working at the intersection of corporate responsibility, sustainability, and community development.
As the Deputy Manager (Community Development), I have been involved in projects that aim to create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of project-affected communities. These initiatives range from education, healthcare, and livelihood promotion to environmental sustainability and grievance redressal. Highlights of my work include organizing impactful campaigns like Swacchta Hi Seva, Smriti Taru Plantation Drive, and various health camps that not only address immediate needs but also foster long-term community well-being. Just on 16th January 2025, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) received the prestigious CSR & Sustainability Award 2025 in the Healthcare category! This award recognizes the company’s commitment to improving community health through initiatives like 1293 health camps in FY23-24, benefiting over 2 Lakh individuals. Additionally, I oversee vital areas such as vigilance awareness, sports development, and cultural events. The collaborative environment, coupled with the scale of impact we can achieve, motivates me every day to push the boundaries of what CSR can accomplish
Q. What is the most satisfying part in your career?
A. The most satisfying part of my career has been the opportunity to create meaningful, lasting change in the lives of people and communities. Whether it was during my early days in microfinance at SKS, helping underserved communities access financial services, or my current role in CSR at Coal India Limited, the ability to positively impact lives has been a constant source of fulfilment.
