Q. How has been your journey from IIFM so far?

A. It has been a great learning experience and an amazing journey filled with challenges, learning opportunities, and achievements. Prior to joining IIFM, I worked as a Junior Research Fellow in the Gangotri Glacier Valley under a project sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, focusing on Paleo-climatic Studies. This experience directed my attention towards Natural Resources, particularly Landscape and Watershed Management.

During my time at IIFM, I concentrated on various areas including watershed management, common property resource management, GIS RS applications, and conflict management. For my Post Masters (M. Phil.) dissertation, I collaborated with AKRSP (I) in Netrang, located in Bharuch district, to conduct a study on Participatory GIS/RS in Watershed Resource Management and Feasibility Analysis of the Koachbar micro-watershed.

Since 2004 I have worked with various NGOs like Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), corporates like Rolta India Limited, and RMSI; worked in Govt agencies like WAPCOS, DoLR-MoRD, Directorate of Tribal Welfare, Govt. of Tripura.

Q. What is the most satisfying part in your career?

A. I find great satisfaction in continuous learning, applying new technologies across sectors and levels. Starting as a Senior Technical Officer in the development sector, I expanded my understanding to become an Associate Director in the geospatial industry, specializing in business development, bidding, and technical marketing. I contributed to an AI and ML-based online Geospatial Platform and honed my consulting skills. Leveraging my IIFM education and experience, I now provide consultancy and advisory services for World Bank-funded projects in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environment, and Social Safeguard aspects.

Notably, I have advanced the concept of water budgeting in watersheds, made geological reports essential in Indo-German projects, and presented technical insights on GIS & RS use in watersheds and land reclamation to the Cabinet Secretariat at Rashtrapati Bhawan. I take pride in contributing to the National Geospatial Platform framework. Additionally, as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Governance, I mentor students and engage with the alumni network, which brings me immense satisfaction.

Q. Has your learning at IIFM helped in shaping how you approach your professional roles?

A. IIFM has been instrumental in my growth, serving as a guiding force and beacon of light. The knowledge gained from my time at IIFM, coupled with my experience during the dissertation work with AKRSP (I) in Gujarat, has greatly contributed to my professional development. IIFM is a unique institute that offers a well-rounded blend of technical, social, and managerial aspects. One of the highlights of my IIFM experience was the submission of last-minute assignments, which fostered essential skills such as reading, research, writing, and collaboration. IIFM nurtured a multi-dimensional perspective and equipped me with the ability to think critically, engage effectively, and lead with confidence.

Q. Who (or what) are the biggest influences or drivers in your careers? What would be your advice to freshers and IIFM graduates who are looking to choose similar sectors/roles.

A. IIFM is an excellent institution for comprehensive learning across multiple sectors. My personal passion for exploring and contributing to the environment and development sector, utilizing modern tools and technologies, has been the driving force behind my career journey.

For freshers, I would suggest making the most of their time at IIFM. The faculty members are exceptional and always ready to provide assistance. The network one can build as an IIFMite is unparalleled, and one can rely on it for any support one might need. Being part of this network and giving one’s best to it is highly beneficial. Even today, whenever I require guidance or support, I turn to IIFM and its alumni for assistance.

Q. How did you decide to go for higher studies post IIFM? And how was the experience?

A. I have undertaken various short-term courses to enhance my skills and knowledge in the fields of Environment, Natural Resource Management, and GIS & RS. However, till date, I have not felt the need to pursue a Ph.D. for further studies.

Q. What are your favorite memories during your IIFM days?

A. Many memories, such as the Orientation program in Panchmarhi, remain close to my heart. I cherish the care and support provided by Tiwari ji, Chandu bhaiya, Arun bhaiya, and their team. Late-night group work sessions at the Computer Centre to complete assignments given in the evening, which had to be submitted the following morning, are etched in my mind. I remember the rush to the classroom at the last minute, and some of us brought packed breakfast from the mess, which we enjoyed during the tea break while sitting next to the fountain. Our entire batch once went out to watch a movie and returned late to the campus, only to face an “orientation” session the next day by our warden, Dr. Vijay Kumar. The memories of our ‘Bamboosa parties’ are something that no one can forget.

Q. In hindsight, what was the biggest contribution (courses, faculty, library, friends, alumni.. Anything else!!)  or take away from IIFM that you think played a critical role in shaping you as an individual or professional?

A. I will say courses, faculty, library, friends, and alumni all played very important roles, faculties like Dr. PC Kotwal, Dr. R.K. Singh (IFS), Dr. VK Sinha (IFS), Dr. MD. Omprakesh, Dr. PK Biswas, Dr. Yogesh Dubey, Dr. Amitabh Pandey, Dr. Parul Rishi, Dr. Suprava Patnaik, Dr. Madhu Verma and many more. I am always thankful to Dr. Omprakash my thesis guide and mentor, even today whenever in need of any guidance/suggestion he is always there to guide me. I am still in touch with most of them; they are always available to support me if required.

I am indebted to Sandeep Da, Suneel Padale, Varun Singh, Manu Sinha, Deepak Dey, Amit Vatsyayan, and many more for their support at different stages of my carrier. Special thanks to Shakib bhai, Sujoy Banerjee, Jayesh bhai, Advait Edgaonkar, Varsha Mehta, Dr. Pradeep Mishra, Dr. Harshavardhan Deshmukh,Rajen Tanwar and many more who are always there to motivate.

Q. The best buddies / seniors /faculty at IIFM? Some memorable tidbits that you like to share?

A. The best part of our batch was our strong sense of togetherness. We thoroughly enjoyed the unity and companionship during our time at IIFM, often going out together for movies, dinners, and picnics. The interaction with the PFM 2004 and 2005 batches was excellent, and we shared many memorable moments during our stay at IIFM. The best part is that most of us have managed to stay connected even after all these years.

The entire batch is well-connected and incredibly supportive. I had the privilege of being roommates with Sarvashish Roy, whom we fondly called ‘Prof.’ We spent many evenings together, enjoying the melodious voice of Rajkumar and the fun-filled company of Praveen, Murli Garu, Vinay, Anshu, Jigyasa, and our beloved Raju bhai. The strong bond among us was evident through the close-knit group of Renjan (our outstanding Class Representative), Neelu, Sumit, Prakash, Subba, Venky, Ritesh, Rajesh, and Satyan. It was a truly enjoyable and enriching learning experience. Our connection is so strong that with just one phone call, our entire batch became members of the Alumni Association in the early days of its membership drive.

Q. As an alumni, what’s your advice to freshers or those who are joining IIFM to get the best out of the 2 years there?

A. I would advise you to prioritize staying updated on the latest developments in your chosen field and actively seek opportunities to acquire the necessary skills. Remember, it’s not just about what you learn at IIFM, but how effectively you apply that knowledge in your career. Take the time to deepen your understanding of your area of interest and actively build a strong professional network. These efforts will undoubtedly yield long-term benefits. In essence, I encourage you to embrace your time at IIFM and make the most of the invaluable opportunities it offers.

Q. What was your typical day at work? And what does it look like while you are on a break?

A. Every day is a new day, whether it’s attending meetings, giving presentations, engaging in discussions, or working towards tight deadlines. There are also moments of attending conferences, engaging in brainstorming sessions, and embarking on journeys. Engaging in geospatial data analytics, understanding client requirements, and designing tailored solutions not only provides a sense of refreshment but also adds a dynamic aspect to the work.

Q. And how about weekends, hobbies, family and anything else you want to add?

A. Spending quality time with family, going on outings, and playing badminton are wonderful ways to relax and rejuvenate. Additionally, organizing and participating in alumni meetings allows for valuable connections and opportunities to reconnect with fellow IIFM graduates.

Q. Favorite Books, movies, authors?

A. I like reading about new developments in my domain. I also enjoy scientific fiction movies and novels. Novels written by Munshi Premchand have been my all time favorite.

Q. IIFM is driven by alumni’s passion and commitment toward its goal. How would you like to contribute to IIFM or IIFM alumni students? Your engagement with IIFM Placement or OT/SI?

A. Several of our juniors have completed their dissertation and on-the-job training with us at WOTR. I am always available to assist students and act as a mentor whenever needed, and I will continue to do so in the future. As a member of the AA Board of Governors, I strive to expand the AA network by connecting with more IIFM alumni. Additionally, due to my fondness for travel, I make an effort to meet with seniors, juniors, and batchmates whenever I visit different locations.
